About The Artist: Raphael (1483-1520) Raphael, an Italian master painter and architect of the High Renaissance, is renowned for his Madonnas and large figure compositions, such as those in the Vatican. His work is celebrated for its clarity, composition, and embodiment of the Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur. Raphael was recognized as a master by 1501 and went on to achieve great success in Rome, including his commission to paint rooms in the Vatican and rebuild St. Peter’s Basilica.
